get them both! 2 of the best games released in the last 5 years, im sure you could pick them up 2nd hand.
Mass Effect fits more with what you like.and it's a masterpiece
By what you like, cant go wrong either way.IMO - RPG goes to Mass, shooting to Bioshock, good story - its a push.
Bioshock= most overrated game of ALL TIMEGet mass effect
BioShock is too good to pass up.
Get both, I liked Bioshock more though, i really couldnt get into Mass Effect

i liked bioshock more because mass effect was too slow of pace but both good games
Well this may seem like an odd answer. I just got done with Mass Effect a couple of weeks ago - and HANDS down it's a more fun game than BioShock IMO. That could be because I'm an RPGer or just a better overall experience. I am currently playing Bioshock and it's a fantastic game as well - but a very big let down for me after playing Mass Effect. They are of course totally different genres - but even so - ME is just a more fun game over all IMO.So here's my suggestion...Buy and play Bioshock first. You will be blown away. Then buy and play Mass Effect. If you can only choose one for a very long time - then go with ME but if you buy a game every month or more often - then play Bioshock first so you can experience it without having ME on your brain. LOLSo I say ME is the better game overall - but play BioShock first so your not dissapointed by playing it after ME like I am.You can't really go wrong with either game - I just think Bioshock then ME is the best order to play them in.
I suggest getting both. Both of these games have their strenghts and weaknesses.Bioshock was short but had a great story that pulled you into the atmosphere...and it was just fun bashing dudes heads in with lead pipes. andMass Effect had a long and expansive story with plenty of side missions and ways to play
I would buy Mass Effect and rent Bioshock. You can beat Bioshock in a couple days and the only real reason to replay it, unless you just love the game to death, is to try to get the other ending. If you play the game right though you don't even have to replay but the last 30 minutes or so of the game to get the other ending. Just my opinion on the matter.

Mass Effect is the only one with role playing, so yeah, easy choice if that's one of your requirements.Mass Effect is also the vastly superior game, overall.
BioShock cause i'm not a big rpg fan.
im playing mass effect as i type this so its no surprise i suggest it but bioshock is definitely well worth a rental
mass effect is my winner. With so much more world to explore and what seems like endless customization and the fact the missions never end makes it amazing... where as bishock you beat it WOOP! your done end of story.
